Dental Anxiety Is Real, Common and Manageable

Dental anxiety can make it really hard to seek the care you need. Many patients in Albuquerque avoid visiting the dentist because of fear, embarrassment or past negative experiences. But untreated dental problems only get worse, and the longer you wait, the bigger the procedures usually become.

At Osuna Dental Care, our team understands. Drs. Chris Kim and Christopher Graham have spent decades helping patients overcome dental anxiety through gentle care, clear communication and modern comfort techniques. We don't judge how long it's been since your last visit. We don't lecture. We listen, and we work at your pace.

If anxiety has been keeping you out of the dentist's chair, you're not alone. Around 9 to 20 percent of Americans experience dental anxiety strong enough to avoid care. We see anxious patients every week, and most leave their first appointment feeling much better than they expected.

You're Not Alone

Dental Anxiety Affects Millions of Adults

It's one of the most common reasons people delay dental care. Recognizing it is the first step toward managing it. Here's what the research shows.

9–20%
Of Americans avoid dental care due to anxiety
~36%
Experience some level of dental fear
5–10%
Have severe phobia avoiding all dental visits

Signs You Might Have Dental Anxiety

If any of these feel familiar, you're experiencing dental anxiety. Recognizing it is the first step toward making appointments easier.

Nervous in the Waiting Room

Heart racing, sweating, restlessness or feeling like you might leave before your appointment.

Trouble Sleeping Before

Lying awake the night before an appointment running through worst-case scenarios.

Physical Tension or Panic

Chest tightness, stomach upset, sweating or panic attacks even just thinking about dental work.

Avoiding Until Severe Pain

Putting off appointments until pain or visible damage forces you to come in. Sound familiar?

Common Causes of Dental Anxiety

Anxiety doesn't come from nowhere. Understanding what specifically scares you helps us address it directly.

Fear of Pain or Needles

The most common cause. Modern anesthesia is far more comfortable than what you may remember from years ago.

Past Traumatic Experience

One bad appointment as a child or adult can leave lasting fear. We work patiently to rebuild trust.

Loss of Control

Lying back with someone working in your mouth feels vulnerable. We give you control through hand signals to pause.

Embarrassment About Teeth

Worried about being judged for the state of your teeth or how long it's been? We don't judge. Ever.

4 Levels of Sedation, From Light to Deep

For patients with mild to severe anxiety, we offer four safe sedation options. Choose the level that fits your comfort and the procedure.

Lightest Deepest
1

Nitrous Oxide

Laughing Gas

Mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask. Quick-acting mild relaxation. Wears off within minutes after the appointment.

  • Awake and aware
  • Drive yourself home
  • Best for mild anxiety
  • Safe for kids
2

Oral Sedation

Pill Before Visit

A small pill taken before the appointment. Deeper relaxation than nitrous oxide. You're awake but very calm and may feel drowsy.

  • Drowsy but awake
  • Driver required
  • Best for moderate anxiety
  • Little memory of visit
3

IV Sedation

Conscious Twilight

Medication delivered through an IV. Deeply relaxed twilight state where you remain responsive but have little memory of the procedure.

  • Twilight state
  • Driver required
  • Best for severe anxiety
  • Vital signs monitored
4

General Anesthesia

Asleep Through Procedure

Used for complex procedures or extreme phobia. You're fully unconscious and have no memory of the appointment.

  • Fully unconscious
  • Driver required
  • For complex cases
  • Full medical monitoring

Coping Strategies That Actually Work

Sedation isn't always needed. These simple strategies help many anxious patients have calm, manageable visits.

Breathing & Mindfulness

Slow box breathing (4 in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold) calms your nervous system. Practice it before and during your appointment for noticeable difference.

Headphones & Music

Bring earbuds or headphones with calming music or a podcast. Drowning out drilling and suction sounds helps many patients tremendously.

A Hand Signal to Pause

Agree on a signal at the start (raised hand, finger snap, etc.) so you can pause anytime. Knowing you have control reduces anxiety dramatically.

Tell Us What Scares You

Specific fear of needles, drilling sounds, gag reflex or smell? Tell us so we can address it directly. We've heard them all and we won't judge.

Helping Children With Dental Anxiety

Dental visits can be intimidating for kids, especially if a parent feels anxious themselves. Children often pick up on adult emotions. With the right approach, dental visits can become routine and even fun.

  • 1
Stay Calm Yourself Kids mirror parents. If you're calm and matter-of-fact about the visit, they likely will be too.
  • 2
Use Simple, Positive Language Say "the dentist counts your teeth" or "they make your teeth shiny" instead of words like pain, hurt, shot or drill.
  • 3
Read Books About Dental Visits Children's books featuring familiar characters going to the dentist normalize the experience and reduce fear.
  • 4
Start Visits Early The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth.

Gentle Care for Young Patients

Our team uses age-appropriate language, positive reinforcement and patience to make dental visits stress-free for kids. We answer their questions, show them tools and never rush. Mild sedation is available when needed.

Common Questions About Dental Anxiety

Quick answers to what anxious patients ask us most. Don't see yours? Just call.

How common is dental anxiety?
About 9 to 20 percent of Americans experience dental anxiety or phobia that prevents regular dental care. You're not alone, and we see anxious patients every week. It's one of the most common reasons people delay needed dental care, but it's manageable with the right team and approach.
Can my child's dental anxiety be managed?
Yes. We use child-friendly communication, distraction techniques, positive reinforcement and, when necessary, mild sedation to keep young patients comfortable. Avoiding words like pain or hurt and using simple, age-appropriate explanations helps. Most children with dental anxiety can have positive visits with the right approach.
Do I really need to visit the dentist if I'm afraid?
Yes. Avoiding dental visits can lead to infections, gum disease, tooth loss and bigger procedures down the road. The longer you wait, the more invasive treatment usually becomes, which often makes anxiety worse. With compassionate care, sedation options and gradual exposure, your fear can ease significantly over time.
Will my dental anxiety improve over time?
Yes, for most patients. Many anxious patients report significant improvement after several calm, positive dental visits. Building trust with a dentist who listens, communicates clearly and respects your boundaries is the foundation. Sedation can help break the cycle of avoidance and prove that visits don't have to be traumatic.
What sedation options are available for dental anxiety?
We offer four levels of sedation. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) provides quick-acting mild relaxation while you stay awake. Oral sedation is a pill taken before the appointment for moderate relaxation. IV sedation provides deeper relaxation while you remain responsive. General anesthesia is used for complex procedures and lets you sleep through treatment. We choose based on your anxiety level and the procedure.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes, when administered by trained professionals. We monitor vital signs throughout sedation and carefully match the sedation level to your medical history, anxiety level and the procedure. We discuss all medications, allergies and health conditions before sedation. The deeper the sedation, the more monitoring we provide for your safety.
Will I be unconscious during sedation dentistry?
It depends on the level. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation keep you awake but relaxed. IV sedation puts you in a deeply relaxed twilight state where you're responsive but may have little memory of the procedure. Only general anesthesia makes you fully unconscious. Most anxious patients do very well with nitrous oxide or oral sedation.
How do I tell my dentist I have anxiety?
Just say it. We hear it every week and we don't judge. Tell us what specifically scares you (needles, drilling sounds, gag reflex, past trauma, etc.) so we can address those specifics. We can show you the tools, explain everything before we start, agree on a hand signal to pause and choose sedation if needed. The first conversation is the hardest part.
Can I drive home after sedation dentistry?
After nitrous oxide, yes. Effects wear off within minutes and you can drive home and resume normal activities. After oral sedation, IV sedation or general anesthesia, you must have a driver. The medications stay in your system for several hours and impair coordination, judgment and reflexes even when you feel fine.
What should I do if I haven't been to the dentist in years?
Schedule a no-pressure consultation. We don't judge how long it's been. Many of our happiest patients hadn't seen a dentist in 10+ years before coming to us. We start with a gentle exam, X-rays and a conversation about what you want and what scares you. We then build a plan you're comfortable with, often using sedation to make initial appointments easier.
Do you serve patients outside Albuquerque?
Yes. We see anxious patients from across the Albuquerque metro area including Northeast Heights, Academy Acres North, Rio Rancho, Corrales, North Valley and surrounding New Mexico communities. Our office is at 5900 Cubero Dr NE STE B, Albuquerque, NM 87109 with easy parking and convenient appointment times.
