Common Questions About Dental Emergencies

Quick answers to what Albuquerque patients ask us most when they're in pain.

Can I get a same-day emergency dental appointment in Albuquerque?
Yes. At Osuna Dental Care, we make every effort to see emergency patients the same day, whether you're new to our practice or an existing patient. Call (505) 884-1989 immediately to describe your situation and we'll get you scheduled as fast as possible.
What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?
Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), not the root. Gently rinse with water if dirty but don't scrub or remove tissue fragments. Try to reinsert it back into the socket. If you can't, store it in milk or saliva. Get to our office within 30 to 60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth. Call (505) 884-1989 immediately.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Severe tooth pain, knocked-out teeth, broken or cracked teeth with sharp edges, facial swelling, abscess or signs of infection, oral bleeding that won't stop, lost fillings or crowns and broken dentures all count as dental emergencies. If you're unsure, call us at (505) 884-1989 and we'll help you decide if you need to come in immediately.
How much does an emergency dentist visit cost in Albuquerque?
Costs vary based on the treatment needed. Emergency exams and X-rays typically range from $100 to $200. Treatment costs depend on what's needed (filling, root canal, extraction, etc.). We provide transparent pricing up front and offer financing through Cherry, CareCredit and Sunbit. Free 3D X-ray is included for implant-related emergencies and treatment planning.
What should I do for severe tooth pain right now?
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1 teaspoon salt in 8 oz water). Gently floss to remove any trapped food. Take over-the-counter pain medication (ibuprofen if not contraindicated). Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for swelling. Don't apply aspirin directly to gums. Call us at (505) 884-1989 to get scheduled for same-day care.
Is a knocked-out tooth always a dental emergency?
Yes. A knocked-out adult tooth is one of the most time-sensitive dental emergencies. The chance of saving the tooth drops dramatically after 30 to 60 minutes. Get to our office or any nearby emergency dentist as quickly as possible. For baby teeth that are knocked out, contact us for guidance but don't try to reinsert them.
Can I go to the ER for a dental emergency?
Hospital emergency rooms can address pain, infection and trauma but typically don't perform actual dental treatment. They'll often prescribe antibiotics or pain medication and refer you to a dentist. For most dental emergencies, calling an emergency dentist directly gets you actual treatment faster. ERs are appropriate for severe trauma, uncontrolled bleeding or facial injury beyond the teeth.
What treatments do you offer for dental emergencies?
We offer tooth-colored fillings for minor damage, root canal therapy to save infected teeth, extractions for non-restorable teeth, emergency denture or appliance repair, antibiotics for infection and prescription or recommendations for pain management. We use 3D digital imaging and CBCT scanning to diagnose quickly and choose the right treatment.
Do you accept walk-ins for dental emergencies?
Calling ahead is strongly recommended even for emergencies. It lets us prepare for your specific situation, gather any imaging needed and minimize your wait time. Call (505) 884-1989 first. If you can't get through and you're in severe pain, you can come to our office at 5900 Cubero Dr NE Ste B during business hours.
What if I lost a filling or crown?
Save the filling or crown if you can find it. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Keep the area clean by rinsing with warm water after meals. If the exposed tooth is sensitive, over-the-counter dental cement (available at pharmacies) can provide temporary protection. Call us at (505) 884-1989 to schedule prompt repair, ideally within a few days.
Can children get same-day emergency dental care?
Yes. We treat patients of all ages. If your child has knocked out a permanent tooth, broken a tooth, or has severe pain or swelling, call us immediately. For a knocked-out baby tooth, don't try to reinsert it. Bring your child in for an evaluation to make sure the underlying adult tooth wasn't damaged.
Do you serve patients outside Albuquerque?
Yes. We see emergency patients from across the Albuquerque metro area including Northeast Heights, Rio Rancho, Corrales, North Valley, Bernalillo and surrounding New Mexico communities. Our office is at 5900 Cubero Dr NE STE B, Albuquerque, NM 87109 with easy parking and convenient access from major routes.
